At Clay County Fire and Rescue, our mission is to protect lives, property, and the environment through education, and emergency response. Fire prevention is a crucial aspect of our service, and we are dedicated to providing the community with the knowledge and resources needed to prevent fires and stay safe.


Fire Safety Tips

1. Smoke Alarms:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

2. Fire Extinguishers:

  • Keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location, such as the kitchen.
  • Ensure everyone in your home knows how to use a fire extinguisher.
  • Check the expiration date and pressure gauge regularly monthly.
  • Remember the P.A.S.S. methood. (Point Aim Squeeze Sweep)

3. Cooking Safety:

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Keep flammable items away from the stove, open flames, or heat conducting surfaces.
  • Turn pot handles inward to prevent accidents.
  •  

4. Electrical Safety:

  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
  • Replace damaged cords and avoid running them under rugs or furniture.
  • Use certified electrical appliances and equipment.

5. Heating Safety:

  • Keep flammable items at least three feet away from heaters.
  • Use space heaters with automatic shut-off features.
  • Ensure your chimney and heating equipment are inspected annually.

Fire Escape Planning

1. Develop a Plan:

  • Create a home fire escape plan with at least two ways out of every room.
  • Designate a meeting place outside your home.
  • Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.

2. Teach Children:

  • Ensure children know how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them.
  • Teach them how to call 911 and what to say.

3. If There’s a Fire:

  • Get low to the ground to avoid smoke.
  • Feel doors for heat before opening them.
  • If trapped, close doors between you and the fire, and signal for help from a window.

1. Fire Safety Education:

  • We offer fire safety presentations for schools, businesses, and community groups.
  • Schedule a visit from our firefighters to learn more about fire prevention and safety.

2. Free Smoke Alarm Installation:

  • Residents can request free smoke alarm installations and inspections.
  • Contact us to schedule an appointment.

3. Fire Prevention Week:

  • Join us for our annual Fire Prevention Week events.
  • Participate in activities, demonstrations, and educational sessions for all ages.
