Current projections could leave us with 4-8 inches of rain per the National Weather Service in Morristown, TN. They are also forecasting heavy straight-line winds up to 50 miles per hour. This could lead to flash flooding, power outages, and impassable roads. The storm is currently working its way through the Gulf Coast. The worst of this storm is currently projected to arrive here by 1PM Friday. Clay County Government and all public safety personnel encourage you to seek shelter in an area away from possible flooding areas. You are also encouraged not to travel unless absolutely necessary. Planning saves lives, so we ask you to take notice of the following list.

• Make a plan: Know your evacuation zone and have a plan for what to do if you need to evacuate or shelter in place.
• Prepare a kit: Have an emergency preparedness kit for your home, car, and office that includes supplies you'll need for at least three days.
• Clean gutters: Clogged gutters can cause leaks, so clean and unclog them before a storm.
• Cover windows: Protect your home from high winds and flying objects by covering your windows.
• Have a first aid kit.
• Monitor communications: Stay informed by following instructions from local authorities and monitoring local TV and radio stations for weather information. Keep batteries available for your radios.
• Keep your cell phones charged.
• Evacuate if told to: If you're told to evacuate, do so immediately. If you can't leave town, go to a designated shelter.
• Avoid floodwaters: Don't walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters.
• Use generators safely: If you use a generator, keep it outdoors and away from windows.
• Turn off appliances: If the power goes out, turn off major appliances to avoid power surge damage when the power comes back on.
• Tie down loose items that could become potential flying hazards.
