Last night, our crews were on scene at the Hogsed Drive fire for around four hours. After clearing the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m., it took another two hours of work before the trucks were back in service and ready for the next call.
Hoses had to be swapped out. Air packs had to be refilled. Tools had to be refueled. Batteries had to be recharged. Equipment had to be cleaned, checked, and put back where it belongs.
And today, the work continues.
The hose used last night has to be washed, dried, inspected, and returned to a ready state so we have clean, serviceable hose available to swap onto the trucks after the next fire. Our paid staff also still has to make their way to our substations to check equipment and make sure those trucks are ready to respond.
This is where our volunteers make such a huge difference.
A structure fire doesn’t end when the flames are out and the trucks leave the driveway. There are hours of work behind the scenes to make sure that when the next call comes in—whether it’s five minutes from now or five days from now—we’re ready to answer it.
Clay County Fire & Rescue relies heavily on volunteers to make that possible. You don’t have to come to us already knowing how to fight fires. You just need to be willing to learn, work, and serve your community.
