| Fire Prevention Week has a history stretching back more than a century. It is observed in October in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871. The devastating fire killed more than 250 people, left approximately 100,000 people without homes, and destroyed more than 17,400 structures.
The National Fire Protection Association began observing Fire Prevention Week in 1922, making this one of the longest-running public safety observances in the United States.
More than 100 years later, the mission remains remarkably simple: prevent fires before they happen and make sure families know what to do when they do.
This year’s theme is:
⚡ “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” ⚡
Throughout this week, Clay County Fire & Rescue will be sharing simple things you can do to reduce the risk of fire and make your home safer.
Some of them take only a few seconds — but those few seconds could save a life.
Follow along with us all week! 🚒 |
